Invincible Environmentalist, Sani, Determined to Materialize His Motto of Universal Peace Possible Solely Through Creating Job Opportunities in Environmental Industries

Over 800 representatives from 94 countries of the world gathered in the World Renewable Energy Congress VI & Renewable Energy 2000 held in Brighton, England. The above photo was taken on the sidelines of the congress. Standing in the photo from left to right are: Professor Donald T. Swift-Hook, the Head of the environmental congress Professor Ali Sayegh, and three environmentalists from India, and Mr. Sani

Mr. Sani in charge of Saving Our Planet Consultant Engineers is to start a four-week trip round the world along with Professor Donald T. Swift-Hook from England. But before particularizing on Sani’s plans and achievements as well as those of Mr. Hook, we would like to tell you a bit about Sani, the invincible Iranian environmentalist who has been dedicating his life and energy to environmental protection.

The middle aged lovely and hardworking environmentalist is back to Iran after nearly a year again. He does not seem to be going to give in to the difficulties and obstacles in his way. He comes back any time with a new brilliant idea and new achievements. When he talks of his new leaps forward, you get thrilled at his frankness and friendliness. Guess who? Yes, you’re right. The same lovely Mr. Sani, who carries you to the heart of hope with his optimism. With him, you never know time elapses for he lures you to a different world by the sweet mixed English-Persian language he speaks. All he is concerned about in the world is environmental protection.

His mind is usually obsessed with wind turbines, recycling of waste, conversion of waste to energy, or other similar issues. You would never know his words and actions fit in unless you call on him at his tiny apartment in northeastern Tehran, where his neighbors like him very much. He does everything for them to show an environmentalist is, at the first place, a human. What stuns you even more than that is the things he has innovated to reveal he really does what he says to prevent pollution.

Last year we went to see the manager of business and project development of the Swiss Von Roll Inova Company, Dr. Kern, in his house when we found an interesting filter he had made to absorb the dust and particles in the air. Anyhow, this time Mohammad Sani is back with a pack of new words and information for us. He says he participated in the World Renewable Energy Congress VI & Renewable Energy 2000 held in Brighton, England, where he addressed the audience elaborately. And this was at the congress where he became an acquaintance of Mr. Donald T. Swift-Hook. Following the congress, Mr. Hook wrote to Sani a letter, part of which follows:

Following the World Renewable Energy Conference at which you made such an impact, I shall be delighted to join Saving Our Planet Engineering Consultants. Most of my scientific and engineering career was spent in the power industry with the old Central Electricity Generating Board and I landed up as Head of a Research Division.

At various times, I was on the Councils of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Energy. I had close connections with many Universities, funding their research (with CEGB funds) and getting external Ph.D.s in my own laboratories for more than a dozen of my staff (and for myself incidentally). Since 1979 I have been a Visiting Mr. at kings College London. I retired early from the CEGB just before privatization.

Sani speaks highly of Mr. Hook, who has been active in renewable energy since 1973 when he started up a major program on wave power and a few years later moved into wind power. Sani, in charge of Saving Our Planet Engineering Consultants, says Mr. Hook represented UK in the International Energy Agency on the Wind Energy Agreement and led several multi-million pound international projects as operating agent including Off-Shore Wind Power and Wakes and Clusters. Mr. Swift-Hook wrote an article in a newspaper once he was just back from an international conference in Helsinki where the latest developments in the economics of wind energy were revealed.

He said in his article: More than 800 MW of wind turbines are up and turning in Germany with over 1 million pounds invested for every megawatt of plant. There are nearly 2,500 of these sizeable machines, the tips of their blades reaching up to 50 m off the ground. Sani believes at this time that Iran is faced with the air pollution crisis and use of renewable energies, it would be wise if we invited experienced experts in the related fields to the country such as Mr. Hook, to discuss with them issues such as starting wind turbines or ways to curb air pollution.

Since early January this year, Sani has taken over 250 thousand km round the world’s five continents. He has constantly pursued the issue of establishing peace through creating jobs in environmental projects. The issues he addressed in the recent Brighton congress concerned such a world issue. The following is a list of the issues of his concern at the congress:

Amount of renewable energies totaled 0.04% that means 99.96% of the energies were provided from fossil fuels. But at the present time the figure has grown to 2% and a simple calculation shows an 80% growth rate.

The number of occupations in the year 2020 provided by clean energies will total 100 million.

At the time being, over 125 million of the 6 billion population of the world are engaged with manufacturing weapons, either directly or indirectly.

The machinery for manufacture of weapons is in the heavy industries sector. Such industries can be used for wind turbines and production of weapons should be banned as much as possible. For instance, drug production and use has been announced prohibited in some countries though it is being produced and consumed.

But such a ban, as the first step, is a positive movement toward its curbing. The same measure should be taken as to manufacture of weapons. In late November 1999, the First Seminar on Conversion of Wastes Into Electric Energy, sponsored by the Recycling and Conversion of Materials Department of Tehran Municipality, was held in Tehran. The seminar was aimed at exchanging information on optimal use of wastes and protection of the environment.

The writer of the above article believes that under the critical circumstances we need to invite environmentalists and experts in the field to Iran to help resolve the problem of air pollution, at the first place. Besides, the interested foreign partners should also be invited to make investments in environmental fields. Despite all the promises the officials have given to the citizens of Tehran during the recent years, for instance, to curb air pollution, they have remained at the level of talks. Curbing air pollution comes before any huger project such as wind turbines, renewable energies, electric cars, etc. Therefore, the Iranian nationals all expect the government to pave the way for the presence of environmentalists and investors such as Mr. Sani or Dr. Hook in the country to help resolve environmental hassles.

It is high time we put words into actions because we do not want to lag behind in the field of environmental protection.

Saving Our Planet, Universal Peace Possible Solely Through Creation of Job Opportunities

Modern wind turbines are propelled by one of two effects: drag, by which wind pushes the blades; and lift, by which the blades are moved in the same way an aircraft wing rises on an air current. Turbines operated by lift turn more rapidly and are inherently more efficient. Wind turbines can be classified as horizontal-axis machines, with their main shafts parallel to the ground, or vertical-axis machines, with shafts perpendicular to the ground. Scientists have estimated that as much as 10 percent of the world’s electricity could be provided by wind generators by the middle of the 21st century. Wind turbine generators consist of a variety of components. The rotor converts the power of the wind to the rotating power of the shaft; a gearbox increases speed; and a generator converts the shaft power into electrical power. Modern machines usually start operating when wind speeds reach about 19 km/h (12 mph), achieve their rated power at about 40 to 48 km/h (25 to 30 mph), and shut down in wind speeds of about 100 km/h (60 mph). The best sites for turbine generators have annual average wind speeds of at least 21 km/h (13 mph).

The Dane Nordex GmbH Company is one of the leading companies in the world which has achieved great successes in building wind turbines. Mr. Fleming Pedersen, who runs Nordex Company with his two sons, is due in Iran to help Iran in starting to build wind turbines. Mr. Pedersen has had, in his former visits to Iran, talks with Tehran Mayor Mr. Alviri, Head of Recycling Department of Tehran Municipality, Davoud Tajeran, and deputy governor general of Isfahan, Mr. Tehrani in terms of creating job opportunities. TEHRAN TIMES made a telephone interview with the younger son of Mr. Pedersen, Jens, of which the excerpt follows.

Jens Pedersen said so far 11,000 megawatts of wind turbines have been installed worldwide. Mr. Pedersen went on to picturize the relationship between use of wind turbines and reduction of air pollution, saying since wind is a non-polluting energy generator, wherever wind turbines are installed no pollution is produced. “I can say that basically wind is our fuel.” He estimated the number of jobs created by wind turbines directly or indirectly to total 50 or 60 thousand throughout the world. As to the ways to reduce air pollution in Tehran, which is mainly caused by cars, Mr. Pedersen said the first and best way is to use more efficient cars until you have the technology to make electric cars. He also said there was the possibility to use renewable energy sources like solar or wind energy. He said Iran would need to spend a lot of money on projects to reduce air pollution. “However,” he went on to say, “spending money on reduction of air pollution is, in fact, a way to save a lot of money. It will be to the benefit of everyone in the society if initiatives are taken in this respect. First and most important outcome is that such initiatives guarantee health and welfare of the citizens. Wind turbines are likely to install in Iran. The importance is that you should get it started. People should believe that it’s possible to use turbines. People should know they can get a lot of energy out of turbines. They need not import turbines. They have at hand the technology, they have the related companies to construct the related buildings, etc.” He said we would not need to reduce air pollution by 100 percent but what we should do is to only cut it down by 20 percent and “nature will get rid of the rest.”

“I believe through the installation of wind turbine in Iran, many job opportunities can be created for the people,” he said. Asked to comment on his father’s idea about his previous visit to Iran, Mr. Pedersen said his father is an ideological man and that he started the company due to his interest in contributing to public welfare. “We aim at helping Iranian companies to start building wind turbines in the future. Maybe the Iranians should get the first wind turbines from here in order to get the feeling but not more because they can then start making wind turbines themselves.”

Meanwhile, the international environmentalist Engineer Mohammad Sani, who has proved his pure faith to his home country and compatriots by organizing visits of foreign environmentalists and environmental activists to Iran, set out on a 12-day long trip last month starting from Copenhagen. He made his way through Singapore, Auckland, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Texas, Houston, and New York, where he addressed meetings and seminars on environment, and reduction of air pollution. Engineer Sani said: “Now the population rate in Los Angeles stands at 4 million and the number of vehicles has grown to 4.5 million. The Los Angeles airport hosts over 150 million passengers annually, which means more air pollution to the city as a result of heavy air traffic.” Sani said he had gotten through to the governor general of California and discussed with him the ways for reducing air pollution there, “where we are going to start our activities from this coming January.” Sani met in San Antonio with environmentalist professor John W. Adams, who encouraged him for running the SAVING OUR PLANET Company, and promised Sani to cooperate with his company in the future. “Professor Adams and I agreed that he actively take part in the ever forthcoming seminars and gatherings on environmental topics in other states of the USA.”

Sani and the reporter of New York Radio held a meeting with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), where they exchanged views on various perspectives of the functions of the UN. “One of the major responsibilities of the UN in the world is to establish peace and security,” said Engineer Sani, pointing to the present 42 wars and skirmishes which are being waged all throughout the world. “The Chechen war, 4 wars in Africa, India-Pakistan present friction, and skirmishes in Albania are good examples to show that peace, to a desirous level, does not exist. We came to the conclusion that the major reason behind outbreak of any war in the world is lack of jobs. In sum, the relation between peace and creating job opportunities through clean energies in the world is undeniable. In the year 2065, some 75 percent of jobs will be in relation to environmental activities including production of electric cars, using solar energy, conversion of wastes into electricity, etc. The sun is 150 million kilometers from the earth. The earth, therefore, only absorbs two-billionths of the sunlight. But even this small figure is 35,000 times bigger than the energy produced through burning other fuels,” said Sani, adding that the subject will be one of the main issues to be discussed in the International Seminar in the year 2000.”

Meanwhile, the Head of International Congress on Clean Energies, Ali Sayigh, has invited Engineer Sani to address the forthcoming International body. Engineer Sani runs the SAVING OUR PLANET Engineers Office, that specializes in design, manufacture, and construction of waste incineration and recycling units, solar panels, wind turbines, and electric cars, in collaboration with foreign companies active in related fields. “Man is the only being that has committed genocide during history. Experience shows that animals, during the 50 million years since their existence on the earth, have not disrupted the ecosystem while the sagacious man has created an imbalance in the ecosystem during the 200 years of the industrial revolution, to the extent that the planet is nearly annihilated.”

Tehran Municipality Recycling Dept. Holds Seminar on Conversion of Wastes to Energy

International encyclopedias and dictionaries define air pollution as follows: Contamination of the atmosphere by gaseous, liquid, or solid wastes or by-products that can endanger human health and the health and welfare of plants and animals, or can attack materials, reduce visibility, or produce undesirable odors.

Atmospheric pollution from vehicle exhaust has, among all other pollutants, been of concern to the people in developing countries. The combustion of coal, oil, and petrol accounts for much of the airborne pollutants. Much of the carbon monoxide and the nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons come from burning petrol and diesel in cars and lorries. Other major pollution sources include iron and steel mills; zinc, lead, and copper smelters; municipal incinerators; oil refineries; and nitric and sulfuric acid plants. Carbon monoxide, for example, is a typical product of internal-combustion engines. Methods for controlling air pollution include removing hazardous material before it is used, removing the pollutant after it is formed, or altering the process so that the pollutant is not formed or occurs only at very low levels. Car exhaust pollutants can be controlled by burning the fuel as completely as possible, by recirculating fumes from fuel tank, carburetor, and crankcase, and by changing the engine exhaust to harmless substances in catalytic converters. Pollutant gases can be collected in liquids or on solids, or incinerated into harmless substances.

Tehran, the Iranian capital city, has seen bulging number of cars in it now standing at over 2 million which have incurred great losses to the health and welfare of the citizens. However, in recent years, at the efforts of environmentalists, especially that of Engineer Mohammad Sani, the attention of the related officials has been drawn to the sensitive issue more than the past. In this respect, the First Seminar on Conversion of Wastes Into Electric Energy, sponsored by the Recycling and Conversion of Materials Department of Tehran Municipality, was held here in Tehran on Tuesday attended by the Managing Director of the department Davoud Tajeran, Engineer Sani, and the vice president and manager of business development and projects of the Swiss Von Roll Inova Company, Mr. Hans-Rudolf Kern, as well as environmental specialists from Canada.

The seminar was aimed at exchange of information on optimal use of wastes and protection of the environment. Highlighting the danger of increasing air pollution in the world caused by promotion of industries and urban development, Engineer Sani said: “The environment has been put in danger during the past 200 years of industrialization and there is no way to keep it from increasing but to use the modern science and industries.” Pointing to the danger of increasing CFC, methane, and CO2 gases in the industrial zones, he said: “Hazardous substances including lead, cadmium, and mercury have largely increased in the air of large cities of the world increasing the risk of suffering from heart diseases and brain tumors. The age-liability to heart attacks in Tehran has reduced to 32. Prevention is necessarily preferred to healing,” he said, “and studies show the budget spent on healing is 25 times more than that spent on prevention. So we need to prepare the ground as rapidly as possible to use pure energies such as solar and wind. The vehicles in Tehran produce 7 tons of brake shoe dirt, 16 tons of tire stuffs, and 5 tons of lead daily, which rings the bell why we should move toward using electric cars and force drivers to have their vehicles tuned up regularly.”

Peace in the Families, Peace in the World

SAVING OUR PLANET Engineers Office is initiating and forwarding seminars and projects worldwide in connection with ecological and health innovations and transfer of technology adapting and fulfilling UN Environment Program (UNEP)’s program saving our planet. The aim is a balance of scientific exchange and practical performance in order to create work for the people in modern endurable technologies, at Regenerative Energies, environmental care, and imminent health protection with good economic effect and an endurable costs saving efficiency. The seminars and initiated projects are developing the survival basis of the country compatibly with ecology, environment and human health and giving people a positive perspective toward their future. This is saving and creating peace among and between people, peace in the families, peace in the communities, towns, cities, regions, countries, peace among and in between states, the continental regions, the continents, peace on earth, and global human survival. Since giving work for the people in an endurable healthy environment is the basis of SAVING OUR PLANET and its innovative impact, and so peace can grow, protected by people themselves everywhere in the global environment.

The Engineers Office SAVING OUR PLANET has already performed worldwide connections to universities, to scientists and engineers, to firms ecologically compatible technologies as well as on the political level. Project studies and consultations have been made in different countries with billions of U.S.-dollars project success already performed.

The Managing Director of SAVING OUR PLANET Engineers Office, Engineer Mohammad Sani, is a well-known environmentalist and lecturer on the habitat. He is an internationally famous figure who has been delivering lectures and trained environmental professors around the world for many years. Recently he held the floor as the first lecturer at the World Renewable Energy Congress in Kuala Lumpur. Back in Iran from the congress, after a successful lecture, he was invited by the Director General of the World Renewable Energy and Congress Chairman, Professor Ali Sayigh, to participate in the coming congress of WREC in 2000 and submit an abstract, which is to be held in Briton, UK.

Engineer Sani, a totally humble and noble man, has been entertaining Mr. Hans-Rudolf Kern, vice president and manager of business development and projects of Swiss Von Roll Inova Environmental Technology Ltd. Mr. Kern told the TEHRAN TIMES he was here to finalize an agreement with the Isfahan’s officials to set a project in motion with regard to waste treatment’. Von Roll Inova is a world technology and market leader in thermal treatment of waste, operating directly in Europe and Middle East, with licenses overseas, most important of which in Japan. More than 290 plants on all 5 continents treat more than 100,000 tons of waste per day. In response to a question posed by the TEHRAN TIMES reporter on the hierarchy of steps in waste management, Mr. Kern said, “There is a typical hierarchy of steps in waste management, starting with reduction of usage of materials, re-use of materials, recovery (recycling) of materials, thermal treatment with recovery of energy and finally disposal (landfilling).” He later said they (he and Engineer Sani) had also held talks with a few officials of Tehran to take measures in line with waste treatment. There are waste dump sites in southern Tehran where the wastes, including hospital wastes which are almost all contaminated, are discharged. The damage these wastes inflict on humans even exceed that of the pollution produced by cars, and in all, vehicles. Mr. Kern later said, in most of the cities around the world, the city officials had come to understand the necessity of waste treatment. “But this is not enough. They should take steps in this regard,” he added.

The managing director of SAVING OUR PLANET Engineers Office called on the investors from home and abroad to invest in Iran’s future environmental industry. He said he had his objectives ahead of him including: waste incineration, creating solar panels, wind turbines, and electric cars. “I’m determined now to work out the last two, wind turbines and electric cars,” he added. “Why not electric cars when we know they produce no air pollution and cost maybe half of fuel-powered vehicles.”
